Adult Beverages Now on Tap

Asheboro is a step closer to opening its first liquor store with the appointment of a three-man Alcoholic Beverage Commission board.
Voters recently approved sales of beer, wine and liquor by a 60-40 margin, many convinced that the move will pave the way for new restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions. The historic vote took place on July 29, 2008, ending a ban enacted in 1950.
While many establishments began serving alcoholic drinks a week following the vote, it could take six months or longer to set up and open a package store, state officials say. Named to oversee the process were retired judge Russell G. Walker Jr., attorney J. Brooke Schmidly and accountant Stephen R. Knight.
Proponents of the change argued that increased tax revenues and related business expansions would far outweigh any potential negative consequences of lifting the ban. Chamber President George Gusler says he already has had several inquiries from national restaurant chains interested in opening new locations in Asheboro.
